I am a renaissance woman and…

Posted on June 21st, 2008 in 42 by askglory

I found this while cleaning today. I wrote it May 2007.

I am a renaissance woman and:

was a Girl Scout and eventually became a Girl Scout assistant leader.

have traveled half way around the world and lived to tell the tales.

attended part high school at an international boarding school on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

was a staff writer for my university newspaper.

wrote a controversial modern sexuality column for my university newspaper.

have a bachelor’s degree of science in elementary education.

as teenager, I supported my family financially working 60 to 80 hours a week babysitting.

bought and owned a home at the tender age of 21.

bought my first car, a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria, at the tender age of 19.

owned and managed a profitable video store.

been a disappointment and a source of pride for my mother.

need at least 3 lifetimes to accomplish all my interests.

can bake breads that have made men weep with gastronomic joy.

at one point, I was a domestic goddess but resigned due to contractual obligations.

was the only white woman while traveling through certain villages in Southeast Asia.

am semi-actively writing five books.

loves humanity in general yet is disgusted by the cruelty humans are capable of in particular.

according to my mother’s endocrinologist, it was highly improbable that I was conceived let alone born.

amaze doctors with my flexibility but am not double jointed.

co-arranged a trombone duet with my brother.

prefer eccentric people to average/normal ones.

When I grow up, I want to:

be a chef.

travel to Africa.

visit Italy.

learn to play the guitar and banjo.

sing the blues with my harmonica.

be a writer.

revolutionize the U.S. educational system.

live in South America.

retreat to Tasmania/New Zealand to write.

help people to tap into their undiscovered artistic talents.

be a therapist.

live my life to the bursting point.

earn a doctorate.

own a little cottage in the middle of nowhere, U.S.A

be a poet.

When I die, I want to:

have left the world better than I found it.

have become a better person.

have made it clear to my family and friends that I love them.

sponsor a big New Orleans jazz brunch one year after my death, jazz band included-no tears.

My accomplishments, goals and aspirations have changed to some degree and this list of lists bears updating. But my last list still holds true. -G.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2: The Pants Get Washed

Apparently, the pants go to college to major in Journalism and write the tell-all “Teenage Girls: Outside In & Acid Washed”. It’s a harrowing page turner starting in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta and spanning the globe from a Malibu Swarovski Crystal Cartel to the Sydney Kangaroo Sex Trade. I heard that Olympia Dukakis reads the audiobook.

I amuse myself with little bits of code like the one below.  Hey, it’s a cheap thrill. ;)

SiteMonkey, I haven’t been keeping up on my work, either. I have so many good excuses as to why I haven’t blogged in over a week but then that’s all they are - excuses. Life happens no matter any of our intentions and plans. It’s what we do while we are struggling through our lives that is notable.

I consider myself an ordinary person. But in my ordinariness, I still seek a satisfying level of quality and excellence. The catch is that seeking excellence in your work can lead into paralyzing perfectionism if left unchecked. Ah, there is the rub. How to be excellent in your work and endeavors without losing yourself in the effort.

You are a good man and an even better one for facing your challenges and stumbles and then getting back on that horse in order to keep trying to improve and progress.

In the last few weeks I have:

  • Worked 80+ hours a week on improving the Home Party/Mail Order company VAM Parties
  • Exorcised my entire house with the help of my brother and a good friend
  • (Re)Started collaborating with my mother on the cookbook we initially wrote more than 15 years ago. I’m on Gooey Crispy Monster Squares experiment #9
  • Tried to open my eyes further in an effort to see my path more clearly
  • Started exercising again in an attempt to turn the $50.90 monthly I pay from a fat tax back into a gym membership
  • Tried to see things as they are

As ever,

Glory

Screwy comments and other problems I’m working on

Hey, Sitemonkey here. I have definitely not been on the ball the last couple of weeks. I’ve had alot going on and haven’t kept up my job here. For that I am truly sorry and hope everyone can understand occasionally life does that. In the last couple of weeks I’ve traveled over 7,000 miles and shot over 6,000 images. Well, I’m slowly catching up on all the jobs that got swept under the rug. Including the many jobs I’ve got waiting for me on Askglory. These include 2 more podcasts that I didn’t get done before I left on my travels and this comment problem. Which seems to related to our theme (Argh!!). So, till I can get it fixed I’ve reverted the site to an older theme that will let everyone get their opinion across. I had thought the site seemed rather quiet. Well, everyone start commenting and if you need to let me know all the thoughts you’ve had to keep inside you since you couldn’t comment on here don’t be afraid to. I could always use some motivation.
